Who We Are

Abbarci Agrobusiness Company Ltd. (AABC) acquired this family run, silverfish/mukene (sundried rastrineobola arggentea/silver cyprind) fishing business in 2022, but the project began in 2009. The business is located on 80 acres of land on the shores of Lake Victoria, at Lakalu Goli – 2kms from Kiyindi Landing Site, 30kms from Jinja and 80kms from Kampala.

Work on the project began in 2009, turning virgin bush into the required infrastructure for a successful silverfish/mukene fishing, drying and selling business. An electricity and water supply were installed, as well as a factory and packing facility, housing, fifteen fishing rigs were built from scratch and over 6.5km of drying racks were constructed for processing mukene.

AABC is the largest licenced commercial silverfish/mukene fishing enterprise in East Africa. The company has introduced new technology for the fishing, drying and processing of silverfish/mukene to ensure not only the highest quality final product, but also to ensure that the fish is hygienically fit for human consumption.

AABC supplies the Ugandan market, as well as external markets in East Africa, hospitals and schools. The company has also created direct jobs and indirect jobs for the local community, with 80% women employment.

One kilogram of silverfish/mukene has enough nutrients to feed more than 20 children, and 15 adults. Our drying machine ensures that the 30% expected loss of product, due to two long rainy seasons which makes drying the fish very difficult, is reduced to nil.

National Fisheries Research Resource Institute (NaFIRRI) advises that Uganda’s Mukene population has increased from 800,000 tons to 1.2 million tons in the past three years, due to overfishing of Nile Perch – its main predator. In addition, the life cycle of Silverfish/Mukene is only 7 months, making it a highly sustainable fish and replenishable resource. The high nutritional value content of the fish, as well as the vast stocks of it in Lake Victoria make the potential implications for increasing food security within Uganda and surrounding East African countries endless.
